All I ever wanted was to spend my life in the company of horses. Like the character in Finding Sara, I was shy and awkward. The only place I belonged was on the back of a horse.
My mother was the writer in the family, immensely talented, though she didn’t have the confidence to pursue her gift. She did all my high school writing assignments, not that I couldn’t do them myself. But she had a burning need to write, a hunger that I lacked. When I began putting stories on paper, for the first time, my passion for horses took a back seat to something new. I realized a part of me had always wanted to write, and it deserved a voice.
I still have my horses, though I’m less of a rider than I once was. And I’m married to the most wonderful man in the world, the inspiration for one of the characters in this novel. But now, when the roosters crow me awake (I have a dozen roosters, and they do wake me up), my mind skips past the barn and goes straight to the stories I will tell. I get my best ideas while shoveling manure.
I write for myself, but also for my mother, who may have become a writer herself, if only she’d known she could.
